Tudo o que você precisa saber sobre a lipoaspiração

Hey, everyone!

In spite of dieting and exercising to lose weight, a lot of people have specific areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. These localized fat deposits are cumbersome and can really alter a person’s figure, don’t you agree? Liposuction is a great alternative to getting rid of localized fat and sculpting the body into a more aesthetically pleasing shape. However, it is important for us to demystify false information you may have encountered, or heard about, to be certain if liposuction will meet your needs. Below, Dr. Fabrício Regiani addresses and clarifies doubts that you may have about liposuction.

Is liposuction recommended for weight loss?

No, liposuction is not, in any way, a weight loss procedure. Do not fall into that trap! This procedure is recommended to those who desire to make changes in their body’s contours that exercising and dieting will not suffice. It is most effective on individuals who are at or close to their ideal weight. Now, you will notice that weight loss is evident immediately after the procedure, since the objective of a liposuction is to remove localized fat. Keep in mind that if you’re looking to lose a significant amount of weight, you will need to maintain a healthy diet and find time in your busy schedule to exercise.

Is liposuction recommended only for the abdomen region?

Liposuction is used to remove localized fat in various parts of the body such as the neck/underneath the chin, upper arms, waist, back, buttocks, inner thighs, and inner knees. The procedure is performed with small, inconspicuous incisions. A cannula, a thin hollow tube, is inserted through the incisions to loosen and suck out the excess fat. A common misconception among patients is that liposuction can only be performed in the abdomen region.

Is it a risky procedure?

As with any surgical procedure, there are standard precautions to follow in order to assure the patient’s uncompromised safety. We are always reading and hearing about some of these surgeries ending deadly. This is caused by the lack of meeting guidelines and standard precautions. Every liposuction procedure has to be performed in a hospital —never in a doctor’s office or elsewhere. This is because it’s important to have the ICU close by, surgical asepsis, medical equipment maintenance standards in check, as well as an anesthesiologist present during and after the procedure. It is just as important to choose a qualified and experienced professional — making sure they are a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

Be cautious of miraculous results. There is a limit to how much fat can be removed in order to maintain the safety of the procedure and especially of the patient. If too much fat is removed, contrary to what people may think, it will not only expose you to many risks, but also cause muscle fibrosis and leave the region looking deformed.

Lipo-light, hidroliposuction, mini-lipo, lipolaser and liposuction —are they all the same thing?

In layman’s terms: be cautious of the different nomenclatures that do not agree with the Federal Medical Council. They are only used to deceive potential patients in an attempt to simplify and sell the surgery. They try to simplify by having the surgery performed at doctor offices and violating standard precautions and health guidelines.

Is the liposuction recovery smooth?

After liposuction, the treated area may cause discomfort. This can be subsided and soothed with prescribed pain medication, lymphatic drainage massage therapy (recommended after the third day), restricted diet, and an elastic bandage you’ll need to use for 60 days.

As liposuction can be performed on several regions of the body, each region recovers differently. The most sensitive areas are the neck/underneath the chin and arms. Remember that you are able to run errands immediately after surgery, but depending on the area treated, you may or may not return to work right away.
